The Institute for Policy Innovation recently published a study that quantified the losses suffered by creative industries as a result of illegal downloading and sharing of copyrighted media. As an example, the music industry alone absorbs over $12.5 billion in economic losses every year and loses approximately 71,060 jobs in U.S. due to illegal downloading and sharing. Everyone, from recording engineers to store clerks, is a victim. Losses of this magnitude also limit the industry’s ability to invest in the creative minds of tomorrow.
The Plain Truth
The unauthorized reproduction and distribution of copyrighted material
is just as illegal as shoplifting. Sharing these files on peer-to-peer
networks like BitTorrent, Gnutella, LimeWire, and Morpheus is against
the law. Unless you are the copyright owner, or you have it’s not
yours to distribute.
